WICKED WINDS BRING DOWN TREES, CAUSING OUTAGES
Storm Damage from the brief wild weather yesterday in Williamsport brought large trees down in several neighborhoods. According to WNEP, a large tree came down on a home at the 300 block of Rural Avenue, and more damage was reported along Royal Avenue as well damage reported along the 200 block of Eldred Street. Other witnesses say limbs and trees were coming down around them like the rain in the city, narrowly missing vehicles with drivers who were braving the storm. PPL reported about 13 hundred customers were without power overnight. Schools with delays or closures due to the outages; Northeast Bradford is Closed today, 3 hour delays for Southern Columbia and Line Mountain Middle and High School – Line Mountain Elementary school should report as usual, and Athens and Sullivan County Schools are on a 2 hour delay.
ACCUSED MURDERER HELD ON ALL CHARGES
A Lycoming County judge has determined that a man arrested after remains of a Montoursville woman were found in his Philadelphia storage locker, be held on all charges for the 2003 murder of Brenda Lee Jacobs. After testimony about the case from a state police officer in court this week, Jade Babcock, formerly of Montoursville, who has been jailed since his September arrest, was charged with criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse and other charges. According to the Sun Gazette, an autopsy on the legs found near Hepburn street in Williamsport this spring are suspected to be those of Jacobs, but the coroner has not positively identified those remains. Babcock remains locked up the Lycoming County Prison with no bail.
PENNSYLVANIA LAWMAKERS SPEAK OUT ABOUT INQUIRY
Pennsylvania lawmakers have spoken out about House Democrats outlining the next phase of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump yesterday. US Representative Fred Keller of Kreamer said that the resolution that was up for a vote will lead to a fake transparency and less due process. The 232-196 vote passed along party lines. No Republicans voted for the resolution.
JOB FAIR THIS WEEKEND FOR TIOGA COUNTY SKI RESORT
A Tioga County Family Resort is holding a job fair this weekend. Ski Sawmill at 383 Oregon Hill Road in Morris is hiring for their 2019-20 season this Saturday November 2nd from 9am til 1pm. Full and part-time, night or daytime positions are available which offer free-skiing benefits and in house discounts for employees. Ski Sawmill is looking for snow makers, instructors, lift operators, kitchen staff and office assistants. Experienced skiers with no experience of instruction can be trained to teach and will be considered serious candidates for the positions offered.
POWER OUTAGES CAUSE SCHOOL CLOSURES
The PPL website this morning is showing a little over 13-hundred power outages after heavy winds and rain blew through Williamsport since yesterday afternoon. Heavy rains have also called for flood warnings in some southern areas of Central Pennsylvania through Saturday afternoon. There are flood warnings in Lycoming and Sullivan counties that ended at about 1am this morning. Power officials in Lycoming County say they are reporting around 600 outages mid-morning and will restore power to customers affected as soon as possible. School affected by the outages, Northeast Bradford is closed today, Southern Columbia School District reporting a 3 hour delay due trees down and electrical issues with downed power lines. Line Mountain Middle and High School is in the same boat with a 3 hour delay, but the Elementary School is in session as scheduled, also Athens and Sullivan County Schools are on a 2 hour delay.
SUSPECT FLEES ON FOOT, APPREHENDED A FEW BLOCKS AWAY
Williamsport Police chased a man suspected of selling narcotics on foot before apprehending him near Firetree place on October 27th, 2019. According to the Sun Gazette, police observed Seneca Mitchell of Dove St who exited the rear passenger door of a vehicle in an area known for drug activity Memorial Avenue and Campbell Streets. When police attempted to interview Mitchell, he fled on foot. Evidence was discarded along the route where Mitchell ran, including a substance that was suspected fentanyl was found by authorities. Mitchell was charged with manufacture, delivery or possession of narcotics with intent to deliver and related charges. He is in Lycoming County Prison today in lieu of $50,000 bail on a Nebbia hold which requires funds be from a source that is reliable. His Preliminary hearing is November 5th.
FORMER PROBATION OFFICER PLEADS GUILTY IN PLEA DEAL
A Herndon man will be sentenced in January after pleading guilty to stealing more than $31,000 from Northumberland County. Former Northumberland County Chief Probation Officer Jimmy Cortelyou admitted he stole the money from house arrest funds from the probation department between 2014 and 2016, and was charged with one felony county of theft by failure to make required distribution of funds. According to the The Daily Item three other felony counts and one misdemeanor count were dropped as part of the plea deal.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM BRINGS NEW BOOKS
Thanks to those who participated in the “Millionaires Read” and the James V Brown Library summer reading programs, the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation has distributed 122 new books dedicated to a summer reader as part of its annual Building Libraries Through Literacy Program. The Foundation’s program added close to 1,220 books since 2011 to the elementary library system’s inventory through the summer readers’ efforts.
NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY DA WARNS OF LETTER SCAM
There is another insurance scam that has been reported affecting Northumberland County residents. Local residents say they received a letter from someone who who claims to be an auditor and consultant for JM Associates of Ontario saying they are the beneficiary of a multi-million dollar life insurance policy from a deceased relative. Recipients of the letter are advised to not reply and never share personal information with parties who contact you and are unknown.
